Introduction
The number 108 is considered sacred by several Eastern religions, such as Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism.
Why 108?
The individual digits comprising 108; 1, 0, and 8 represent one thing, nothing, and everything (infinity), representing the belief of the ultimate reality of the universe as being simultaneously one, emptiness, and infinite.
The 4 Yugas of time also correspond to the number 108 (1+0+8) = 9:
- Satyug – 172,800 years (1+7+2+8 = 18 == (1+8 = 9)
- TretaYug – 1296000 years (1+2+9+6 = 18 = (1+8 = 9)
- DwaparYug – 864000 years (8+4+6) = 18 = (1+8 = 9)
- Kaliyug – 432000 years (4+3+2) = 9
